The West Street Garden in New York City began as an empty lot and was transformed into a neighborhood garden through community effort and organizing.

The West Street Garden Foundation wanted to create a website to tell the story of the garden, celebrate the community action, and build support for future efforts.
The website’s visual elements reflect the people-powered, locally-grown effort to enhance the natural environment and build community in the neighborhood. The typography leans into retro, environmental tones, while hand-drawn illustrations give a human, grassroots feel. Energetic, bright greens are balanced by neutral whites and blacks. The wordmark's characters branch off to twine and curl like leaves or roots.

The design system and scope of the site afforded a lot of room for play and creativity. Hand-drawn illustrations and interaction design bring added joy and engagement to the site.
